More on Synchronized File Store

I may have found a solution to my synch issue I posted previously.

iFolder looks promising. It basically meets most of my criteria. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Cross-platform: runs on OSX, Windows, Linux, etc.
  • Auto-syncs files to server and propagates to all client machines.
  • Has a web-front end so you can access your files anywhere using a web-browser.
  • Open Source!
  • User/Group Security

From the iFolder website:

iFolder is a simple and secure storage solution that can increase your productivity by enabling you to back up, access and manage your personal files-from anywhere, at any time. Once you have installed iFolder, you simply save your files locally-as you have always done-and iFolder automatically updates the files on a network server and delivers them to the other machines you use.

Now it's just a matter of finding some free time to test it out and see how well it works...

Unison + VPN

You could use Unison to sync your files (work for *nix/win) http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/

And if you want to access it a tunnel/VPN Like soft could do it
Hamachi - www.hamachi.cc (very nice and easy to use, but not open source)
Zebedee - http://www.winton.org.uk/zebedee/
...

I currently use Hamachi when on my laptop and all my pc. Its so easy! I currently doesn't have the time to implement something more complex..

iFolder combined with a tunneling apps seem a great idea, will have to take a look!

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've heard a bit about Unison but I was under the impression that it is no longer in development.  I'll have to take a look at it and Hamachi at some point.  So far iFolder is looking very promising (after many hours of fighting to get it working!).  I have lots of more testing to do with it but if it fails to meet my needs I'll definately take a look at both of your suggestions.

Thanks

Keep us updated on this, I

Keep us updated on this, I am very interested in how this works out, because I would also like a file sync program.
